Brian Dettmer- a Decade of turning Book Surgery into Art

The richness and depth of the book is universally respected yet often undiscovered as the monopoly of the form and relevance of the information fades over time. The book’s intended function has decreased and the form remains linear in a non-linear world. By altering physical forms of information and shifting preconceived functions, new and unexpected roles emerge. This is the area I currently operate in. Through meticulous excavation or concise alteration I edit or dissect communicative objects or systems such as books, maps, tapes and other media. The medium’s role transforms. Its content is recontextualized and new meanings or interpretations emerge.

Last night was the photography show opening that some of my photos are hanging in. It was also open studio night at the school street art studios in Gardner. These are some shots I took while walking around inside and outside of the building. The building was once used for wooden furniture production, but has since been repurposed as studio spaces and offices. I guess this just shows how much I word like to get into some urban exploring!

Featured Curator of the Week: Philip Intile [pi-slices]

Slater Combes, also known as gnumblr, is a 20 year old who lives in Orange County, California. He started creating digital art in 2008 when he discovered fractal art and fractal manipulation. However, he has only been working with 3D animation in Cinema 4D since late 2012. He is inspired by the works of zolloc, dvdp and mrdiv.

Art, to me, means so many things it’s difficult to put it into words. Art is the satisfaction I feel whenever I publish a new animation, the frustration I feel when I can’t get my ideas to work in the program I use, and the happiness I feel when I show someone my animations in person, and it’s the despair I feel when I don’t even have the willpower to open the program I use at all. Art is all of those things and more to me.

"The final mystery is oneself. When one has weighed the sun in the balance, and measured the steps of the moon, and mapped out the seven heavens star by star, there still remains oneself. Who can calculate the orbit of his own soul?"
